Knitting By Heart:
A New Book That Weaves Together Craft, Spirit, and Community
New York, NY — June 2025 — In an era of fast fashion and digital overwhelm, Knitting by Heart arrives as a soulful invitation to slow down, create with purpose, and reconnect to the ancient rhythm of handwork. Written by beloved fiber educators Renate Hiller and Mikae Toma, and designed by Claudio Rodriguez, this richly illustrated book is a spiritual and practical guide to the meditative art of knitting.
Rooted in decades of Waldorf education and the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, Knitting by Heart explores how handcraft not only nurtures the creative spirit, but also cultivates a deeper relationship with the natural world. The book features projects that evolve from simple headbands and scarves to unique tunics, sweaters and jackets—each one grounded in the organic gestures of spiral, vertical, and horizontal movement.
“When we create with reverence and attention,” the authors write, “both the maker and the material are transformed.”
Highlights of the book include:
Reflections on fiber, form, and color and the healing power of handwork
Projects suitable for all levels, designed to build skills and nurture inner growth
A guide through the process of making projects in relationship to the natural world
Inspired by Steiner’s educational philosophy and holistic design
Original photography and design by Claudio Rodriguez
With its poetic voice and timeless instruction, Knitting by Heart is a celebration of community, creativity, and care—ideal for knitters, teachers, fiber artists, and anyone seeking deeper meaning in their creative practice.
